DR. KERRY BLACK

Assistant Professor and Canada Research Chair in Integrated Knowledge, Engineering & Sustainable Communities at the University of Calgary

Dr. Black is a renowned leader in sustainable infrastructure, with a unique cross-disciplinary approach that integrates engineering, policy, and socio-economic factors. Her research focuses on advancing sustainable water and wastewater management in Indigenous communities, ensuring that infrastructure development supports resilient and healthy communities. Over the past 12 years, Dr. Black has worked in academic, public, private, and non-profit sectors, collaborating with Indigenous communities across Canada to address urgent infrastructure challenges.

An advocate for diversity in STEM, sustainability, and community development, Dr. Black’s work is rooted in meaningful partnerships with Indigenous Nations, guided by principles of respect and collaboration.

With over 20 years of experience in the water industry, Gillian has built a strong reputation for developing successful water projects across Western Canada. She is passionate about creating sustainable, economically viable solutions for communities, with a focus on water supply, treatment, and stormwater management. Her expertise lies in managing project deliverables, budgets, and schedules while ensuring the right teams are positioned to deliver exceptional results.

Gillian’s deep commitment to public health drives her work, where she strives to find solutions that not only address immediate needs but also provide long-term infrastructure benefits.
